The address
Sotogrande was masterplanned in 1962 by Filipino-American businessman Joseph McMicking on 2,000 hectares straddling the Málaga–Cádiz border. Sixty years on, it remains Europe's largest single-developer private residential estate — and the quiet old-money counterweight to Marbella's glamour. Life here is shaped by three institutions: Valderrama Golf (host of the 1997 Ryder Cup), Santa María Polo Club (the most important polo destination in continental Europe, July–August), and Sotogrande International School (the only full IB campus on the coast). The estate divides into four distinct zones — Sotogrande Alto on the hill, La Reserva for newer architecture, the Marina for yacht culture, and Sotogrande Costa for the original seafront villas. Resales are infrequent, the rental market is thin by design, and most buyers are here for personal multi-generational use.
