The weather, honestly
December–February average highs 16–18°C in Marbella, lows 8–10°C. Sea temperature drops to 16°C — too cold to swim for most. Rain concentrates in November and March; January is often the driest sunny month. Inland (Ronda, Antequera) regularly sees frost.
What stays open
Almost everything residential — supermarkets, banks, schools, doctors, restaurants in towns with year-round populations (Estepona, Fuengirola, San Pedro, La Cala). Beach club tier 1 closes mid-October to mid-April. Puerto Banús nightclubs run reduced winter hours.

Coffee outside in shorts at 1pm. Lunch at chiringuitos that stay open (Bono Beach, El Chiringuito Los Monteros). Padel and golf year-round. Christmas markets in Estepona and Marbella old towns. Sierra Nevada skiing 2.5 hours away.
Why January wins
Hotel rates collapse, restaurants take bookings same-day, gym capacity restored, beach walks alone. See weather month by month.
