What padrón is

Registration on the municipal census. Not a visa, not a residency status — just confirmation that you actually live in a particular town. Foundational for: school enrolment, free or subsidised healthcare, IBI discounts, vehicle registration, voting in local elections (EU citizens).

How to get it

Book a town hall appointment online (cita previa). Bring: passport, NIE, rental contract or property deeds, latest utility bill in your name. The clerk enters you in the padrón and prints a volante immediately, free.

Renewal rules

EU citizens: every 5 years. Non-EU: every 2 years. Miss it and you are removed automatically — meaning your kids could lose their school place.

The under-used benefit

Multiple residents per address are allowed. Registering elderly visiting parents for the historico helps them later if they apply for residency. See our NIE step-by-step and residency options.
