Why the east is different

The Axarquía is the Costa del Sol's eastern fringe — quieter, more Spanish, more dramatic landscape. Property prices ~30% lower than the western coast for equivalent quality.

Nerja

Pop ~21,000. Coastal, the Balcón de Europa, Burriana beach. Strong British and Dutch community. Old town property: €4,800–€6,500/m². Outskirts: €2,900–€4,200/m².

Frigiliana

The most beautiful white village in Andalucía (the official guides agree). Pop ~3,000. 10 min uphill from Nerja. Renovated village houses €280,000–€650,000. Mountain-side villas €700,000–€1.6M.

Cómpeta

Wine country. International community heavy on Brits, Germans, Dutch. Houses with land from €220,000.

Sunny View School (Torre del Mar, British curriculum). Almuñécar International School further east. Most international families bus to these, or use excellent Spanish state schools.

Practical

30 min to Málaga airport — closer than Marbella for the western Axarquía.
