The Sotogrande proposition
2,000 hectares, planned in 1962 by US developer Joseph McMicking, intentionally low-density and gated. Today: 2,800 properties, ~9,000 residents in winter, 30,000+ in August.
Who lives there
Old money — Spanish, British, Argentinean, US — second and third generation. New money — Northern European tech, US finance, Middle Eastern. The mix actually works; Sotogrande's social code is collegial, not flashy.
The community
Sotogrande International School (one of Europe's best IB schools) is the social anchor for under-18s. The Real Club de Golf, Valderrama and La Reserva clubs anchor the adults. The Marina runs the social calendar in summer.
