Best golf areas in Spain
Spain has roughly 360 golf courses; around 70 of them sit on the Costa del Sol. The density is unique in Europe — and is the reason "Costa del Sol" and "Costa del Golf" are often used interchangeably. The hierarchy of courses, and the property markets that follow them, is well-established.
This is the 2026 ranking, and where to buy alongside it.
The top tier — courses that travel for
Valderrama (Sotogrande): host of the 1997 Ryder Cup and still the most prestigious course in continental Europe. Finca Cortesín (Casares): host of the 2023 Solheim Cup, widely rated top 3 in Spain. La Reserva Club (Sotogrande): the modern Sotogrande member-led course. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande: the original Trent Jones design. Las Brisas (Nueva Andalucía): the Robert Trent Jones senior course at the heart of Marbella's Golf Valley.
The strong second tier
Aloha (Nueva Andalucía), Los Naranjos (Nueva Andalucía), Marbella Club Golf Resort (Benahavís), La Quinta (Benahavís), Real Club de Golf Guadalmina, Atalaya (Estepona), Flamingos (Estepona), El Paraíso (Estepona), Santa María (Elviria), Río Real (Marbella East), San Roque Old Course (Sotogrande). All championship-grade, all walkable from established villa stock.
Where to buy if golf is the driver
Sotogrande for Valderrama and La Reserva access. Benahavís (La Quinta, Marbella Club Golf, El Madroñal) for course variety and altitude views. Nueva Andalucía for walkable access to three top-tier courses inside one valley. Casares (Finca Cortesín) for trophy course frontage. Real de la Quinta when the Tom Fazio course delivers.
Frequently asked questions
- Which course is the hardest to get on?
- Valderrama for non-members; access is tightly controlled. La Reserva and Sotogrande Old Course are also member-priority. Finca Cortesín, La Quinta, Los Naranjos, Aloha and most others accept paying guests with reasonable notice.
- Do villas on golf courses command a premium?
- Yes — typically 15–30% over comparable non-golf villas, more for direct course frontage on a top-tier venue.
- When is the best season to play?
- October to May. Summer is playable but hot from 11am onward — early morning tee times are the answer.
